Director's Message

Dear Friends,

When I first walked through the door of Genesis Home in November of 1999, I found a place where staff were empowered to create positive change, where families could reunite and make a fresh start, and where childen could find a safe and nurturing environment. This atmosphere of patience and trust allowed both residents and employees to grow and thrive. At the center of this grand social experiment was one man: Stan Holt. I now know what Stan worked so hard to achieve, that Genesis Home is a special place, and that continued success will require the joint efforts of staff, residents, and the community. While Stan has moved on to continue his fight against homelessness in a new role, we at Genesis Home are putting his knowledge into action as we move forward in the fight to end homelessness.Right now is an exciting time to be involved in issues related to homelessness.

Durham is in the process of making and implementing a “Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness”. This campaign has enlisted local elected officials, leaders in business and industry, service providers, and experts in the field as part of a larger, national effort to identify and serve the homeless population and those at risk of becoming homeless. The emphasis is on outcomes, new evidence-based practices, and on supportive services that help individuals maintain permanent housing. Throughout this process, Genesis Home has been an advocate for the needs of families and children, and we will continue to give voice to this silent majority as the Plan becomes a reality.

There is much to be done in the year ahead. Already, Genesis Home has begun a series of facility improvements that will make the shelter more comfortable for our residents. The agency is also in the process of formalizing a program to serve homeless youth that have aged out of foster care. Currently, homeless youth are left with few options when leaving the foster care system and many are forced to enter adult shelters where they are at risk of getting “lost in the crowd.” The need is clear and our capacity to step forward and fill this gap is an exciting opportunity that emphasizes our commitment to children and youth. With all that we’ve done so far, and all that we plan to do in the future, nothing is possible without your generous support. Poverty and homelessness isn’t a sexy topic, but I applaud your interest in what we do and hope that you will continue to bless us with your time, talent, and treasure in the days ahead.

Best Wishes,

Ryan J. Fehrman
